Developed at Stanford University, Critter Corral helps children build foundational number concepts through play.
**** Critical Pre-K Number Skills:
** Linking number words with number symbols with magnitudes.
** Estimation.
** 1-to-1 correspondence.
** Size and number comparison.
** Concepts of more and less.
** Laying the foundation for addition and subtraction.
**** Research-Based Techniques for Early Mathematics Learning:
** Activities integrate multiple number concepts and ways of representing number. Research shows this to be more effective than focusing on single concepts or representations.
** Children use math to help characters achieve meaningful goals, such as helping a chef cook the right amount of food for the customers. Children build confidence and learn that math can be fun and useful.
** Game challenge and content adapt with the learner’s progress.
** A research study with 200 four year olds found significant math learning gains (See www.critter-corral.com/reasearch.)
** Critter Corral is being developed as part of an ongoing Stanford University research project. There are many open questions about how children learn from games. We are always looking to improve Critter Corral as we understand more about children’s learning in the game, and we may test hypotheses about what leads to improved learning by making changes in the game.
